As an Admin, you can configure Exchange 2010 to send a copy of each message to the Jatheon cCore archiving appliance. This is a 3-step process: create an SMTP contact, create a send connector, and configure journaling.

Affected software version: Exchange 2010

Create an SMTP contact

The SMTP contact tells Exchange where to send the journaled messages.

  1. Open your Exchange Management Console.
  2. Go to Recipient Configuration and create a new contact under your mail contacts. You can call it JatheonTest.
  3. Set the external email address to journalmaster@FQDN of the Jatheon appliance (for example: journalmaster@jatarc.jatheon.com). This is the email address on the Jatheon appliance that will receive all the email from Exchange.

Create a send connector

The send connector tells Exchange how to send journaled messages over to the Jatheon archiver.

  1. Under Organization Configuration, find Hub transport settings.
  2. Open the Send Connectors tab.
  3. Right-click to create a new connector, call it Jatheon and leave the connector as custom.
  4. Set the address space for this connector to the FQDN of the appliance (jatarc.jatheon.com) and set the cost to 1.
  5. Increase the cost of all other existing connectors so they are at least 9 apart from the Jatheon connector (10, 20...), using the cost option under the address space tab. The Jatheon connector should have the lowest cost of all existing connectors on the Exchange server. This doesn't affect your environment; it just allows Exchange to choose connectors wisely.
  6. Select Route email through the following smart hosts and apply the necessary settings. This sends all email destined to the Jatheon appliance directly to it, which is much faster than querying the DNS.
  7. Leave authentication as none, since there is no authentication for the Jatheon appliance.
  8. If you don't have your default Exchange Server, add it in the next step.

Configure journaling

Journaling is the mechanism Microsoft uses to send a copy of each message from Exchange over to the Jatheon appliance.

  1. In the Exchange Management Console, under Organization configuration, find Hub transport.
  2. Choose the Journaling tab and right-click to create a new journaling rule.
  3. Name the rule (Jatheon).
  4. Select the contact you created in the first step (send journal reports to email address).
  5. Leave the mail recipient blank. This makes it a global rule, so a copy of every message that comes in or out of Exchange is sent over to the Jatheon appliance.
  6. Enable the rule.
