How to Migrate Spam Experts

This article explains how to export archived email data from Spam Experts / Mail Assure and import it into Jatheon.

Overview

  • Source: Spam Experts / N-able Mail Assure Archiving
  • Export format: EML files (downloaded in ZIP packages via Log Search). The legacy “Archiving > Export” menu is deprecated in most tenants.
  • Target: Jatheon Cloud or cCore via bulk import.

Pre-Migration Requirements

  1. Mail Assure access with Admin or Domain permissions (required for Log Search and archive export).
  2. Date ranges and mailbox scope (per user, domain, or global) defined in advance.
  3. Sufficient storage space for ZIP downloads of EML files.
  4. Jatheon destination prepared (bucket or upload path, ingestion mappings, and permissions verified).

Step 1: Export from Spam Experts / Mail Assure

  1. Navigate to Incoming > Logs or Archiving > Log Search depending on your Mail Assure UI version.
  2. In Query Rules, set In archive = Yes. Add optional filters (date range, sender, recipient, or domain) as needed.
  3. Click Show Results to display archived messages.
  4. Select messages (or all on the page) and choose Download / Export to retrieve a ZIP containing .eml files.
  5. Repeat for additional date ranges if necessary to keep file sizes manageable (monthly or quarterly batches are recommended).

Tip: For large domain-wide exports, contact Mail Assure Support. They can provide a full archive export for your domain upon request.

Step 2: Prepare the Exported Data

  • Confirm that downloaded archives contain valid .eml files (RFC 5322 format). If any other file type appears, convert it to .eml.
  • Organize files by domain, mailbox, and date range (e.g., domain.com/j.smith/2024-Q1/).
  • Keep ZIP sizes under 10–20 GB for stable upload performance. Split larger sets if needed.

Step 3: Import into Jatheon

  1. Upload the prepared folders or ZIP files to your designated Jatheon import location (S3 bucket or web upload, as provided in your onboarding instructions).
  2. If required, create or update a CSV mapping file that pairs each mailbox with its upload folder/path.
  3. Notify Jatheon Support once uploads are complete so ingestion can be scheduled and monitored.

Step 4: Post-Import Verification

  • Select sample mailboxes and verify item counts, date ranges, attachments, and message headers.
  • Run searches in Jatheon by sender, recipient, or subject to cross-check against exported source data.
  • Confirm that all legal holds, tags, or case associations are preserved.

Notes & Known Limitations

  • The legacy Archiving > Export menu is deprecated in most tenants; use the Log Search method instead.
  • Exports are delivered as ZIP archives of EML files. Native PST export is not supported in Mail Assure.
  • If internal mail was not journaled to Mail Assure, those messages will not appear in the exported archive.
